03/08/2017 12:00 pm – 03/08/2017 1:30 pm Flipping” Experiential and Studio Based Approaches: Understanding the Opportunities and Challenges in Online Learning Maaike Bouwmeester New York University Maaike will explore the role of experiential and studio-based learning in bridging the formal curriculum with real world applications—and its vital importance to the ECT campus-based and future online programs. She will discuss this topic through the lens of learning sciences research, her own teaching practice, and her 10+ years of industry experience developing digital tools that support experiential learning. How might we adapt these active learning approaches to the online learning environment? How might the program evolve (or “flip”) some of these approaches to be more effective online? Maaike Bouwmeester is a Visiting Clinical Assistant Professor in NYU’s Digital Media Design for Learning (DMDL) Masters program. She has spent the better part of two decades working at the intersection of educational software design, research and the learning sciences. Her work focuses on digital tools that support active and experiential learning, collaboration, e-portfolios, performance and outcomes assessment, and educational quality in multiple learning modalities- face to face, hybrid and online. Her most recent research interests include understanding how various programs and pedagogies foster creativity, and innovation and social change- important dispositions in a rapidly changing educational landscape.
